A look at the TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database shows that IHG’s Holiday Inn brand currently plans to open 80 new hotel projects, half of them in Asia-Pacific.

According to our research, Holiday Inn will grow by 80 properties and 21,073 keys in the coming years. We take a closer look at the expansion plans of this prolific brand.

Holiday Inn hotel openings by year

The rest of 2021 will be a busy time for Holiday Inn, with 24 openings and 5,085 rooms expected to go live soon. Six of these properties are already in the pre-opening phase.

This impressive growth will continue in 2022, when another 18 properties with 4,086 keys are expected to go live. But 2023 is shaping up to be a little slower, with just 12 projects and 2,920 rooms in the works at present, followed by another 26 projects and 8,982 keys in 2024 and beyond.

Key growth regions for Holiday Inn

Holiday Inn is expanding its footprint in Asia-Pacific faster than in any other region – 40 hotels (with 9,173 keys) will open here in the near future, equivalent to 50% of its entire development program. India is also the brand’s leading national growth market, with 12 distinct programs and 1,565 rooms on the program, followed closely by Australia (nine openings and 1,589 keys).

Europe ranks second behind APAC on a region-by-region basis, with 21 projects underway and 4,870 rooms in the pipeline. Meanwhile, in the Middle East, Holiday Inn will add eleven properties with 5,989 rooms to its offering.

Elsewhere, six hotels will be launched in North America, while Africa and Latin America will each receive one new Holiday Inn property.

New Holiday Inn Hotels to Watch

In Indonesia, the 250-room Holiday Inn Resort Bintan Lagoi will open later this year. Part of a dual-brand development that will also house a Hotel Indigo property, this project marks IHG’s first foray into Bintan Island. The hotel will be located on the beachfront in Lagoi Bay and will offer a range of family-friendly amenities, as well as spacious meeting and event rooms.

Nearby, in Malaysia, Holiday Inn Sepang should also be launched before the end of the year. The 250-room property will provide guests with easy access to Sepang International Circuit, the 170-store Mitsui Outlet Park KLIA and Xiamen University in Malaysia. Its on-site facilities will include a lounge and cocktail bar, restaurant, gym and state-of-the-art conference facilities.

Finally, the 220-key Holiday Inn Kuala Lumpur Bangsar is another notable Malaysian project. It will feature the brand’s Open Lobby concept, which combines a variety of public spaces into one cohesive open space where customers can eat, relax, work or just hang out. Located near key locations such as KLCC, Chinatown, and Bukit Bintang, the hotel seems to be ideally placed to accommodate both business and leisure travelers.
