Enjoy heartwarming Holiday Inn music – Eugene Weekly

The John G. Shedd Institute for the Performing Arts dreams of a White Christmas, and Eugene’s audiences should be too. In December, Shedd Theatricals will present Holiday Inn, the first musical they have performed on stage in two years.

Holiday Inn is a 2016 Broadway theatrical adaptation of the 1942 musical of the same name by composer and songwriter Irving Berlin. The film starred Fred Astaire and Bing Crosby, and featured audiences classic numbers like “Happy Holiday.” and “White Christmas“.

Wrapped up and down with musical numbers, Holiday Inn tells the story of a “man of song and dance” who leaves the company and moves to a dilapidated Connecticut farmhouse, which he transforms into an inn with the help of a local school teacher. The hostel organizes shows to celebrate each holiday, hence its name. The Shedd’s executive director, Jim Ralph, calls the production “backstage classical music,” or a show within a show.

Ralph says The Shedd usually has a celebration and holiday show during the month of December. But last year’s very COVID Christmas brought inevitable setbacks. Although concerts and guest artists open the doors of The Shedd to the public, Holiday Inn will be their first musical since December 2019.

Ralph says Holiday Inn is full of heart, and theatergoers can expect a great cast, a lot of comedy, a lot of dancing and, most importantly, “all those goddamn songs.”

“Even if you don’t think you know them, you know a lot of them just because they’re in the bone of your ear,” he says. “The songs are just fabulous and really well chosen. “

Holiday Inn takes place at Jaqua Concert Hall in Shedd at 7:30 p.m. on December 3, 4, 10, 11, 17 and 18 with mornings at 2 p.m. on December 5 and 19. Tickets cost between $ 29 and $ 39, with discounts available, at the Shedd Institute ticketing (541-434-7000) or online at
