Cycas Hospitality continues to advance its ambitious expansion program, having signed its first Swiss hotel this month.
The 119 rooms Holiday Inn Express & Suites Sion will be operated by the award-winning pan-European operator under its first lease agreement with an investment group from Credit Suisse Asset Management.
When it opens in fall 2024, the new property will offer a combination of 95 classic Holiday Inn Express rooms and 24 suites with kitchenettes near Sion train station, as well as an on-site restaurant on the ground floor to take advantage of its lively location in the new Cour de Gare and by the new concert hall. Guests will also enjoy a 24/7 gym and meeting room.
Zion’s economic growth
The hotel will be at the heart of a major commercial development intended to capitalize on Sion’s position as the region’s economic and commercial hub and to link the dynamic city center to the old town.
The new Cour de Gare project, led by Comptoir Immobilier, will bring together more than 10,300 m² of offices, 300 apartments and 5,700 m² of shops. The complex will also include one of the largest concert and conference halls in the canton of Valais – attached to the hotel – as well as an underground car park for 625 vehicles.
The hotel is also well placed for the EPFL Valais Wallis scientific research institute – a center of excellence with more than 400 employees – which includes its Energypolis School of Engineering campus.
Gateway to the ski slopes
Capital of Valais, one of the most popular tourist regions in Switzerland, the new hotel is ideally located for enjoying the most famous ski resorts in Europe. The Four Valleys, Switzerland’s largest ski area, are currently just a 30-minute drive away, but could be even more accessible in a few years after the hotel opens if a new cable car project comes to fruition, offering connection 20 minutes direct from the resort next to the slopes.
Sion is also an hour from Zermatt, Verbier, Chamonix Mont-Blanc and the Portes du Soleil; the largest interconnected ski area in the world.
Sonia Romano, Property Asset Manager at Credit Suisse Asset Management, said, “With Sion’s wide array of market drivers, from manufacturing and finance to tourism and research, there is an opportunity to introduce a new accommodation option to the rapidly growing city. The Cour de Gare development with the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Sion is well positioned to meet the changing needs of visitors to Sion.
Asli Kutlucan, Development Manager at Cycas Hospitality, said: “We are proud to strengthen our long-standing relationship with IHG Hotels & Resorts and to work with Credit Suisse Asset Management on this fantastic new property.
“Sion has always been a strategically important commercial location, so it seems fitting that this new hotel represents Cycas’s very first hotel in Switzerland. We are excited about the opportunities that the new Cour de Gare presents to us and we are delighted to consolidate our reputation as the preferred hotel management company of international hotel groups and investors.
The hotel becomes Cycas’ second IHG Hotels & Resorts property under the Holiday Inn Express & Suites brand, after signing a rental agreement in February 2020 to help develop and manage the first new Holiday Inn Express & Suites concept in Europe ; a 99 bedroom property in Deventer (Netherlands).
