An exploration geologist who lives in the mountains, but loves the sea, prefers to spend time generating profitable income for the locals. Joni Dagoya of Gold Basin Mining Pty Ltd leads the exploration team at Balevuto, Ba.

An exploration geologist who lives in the mountains, but loves the sea, prefers to spend time generating profitable income for the locals.

Gold Basin Mining, an exploration arm and subsidiary of Fiji’s leading gold producer,

Vatukoula Gold Mines, holds prospecting licenses for Balevuto and Toge.

Licenses expire in 2024.

Meanwhile, Mr. Dagoya, a Nasiriti from Naitasiri, is a descendant of the main Nabobuco clan.

“My father is one of the three brothers behind the Nabobuco clan,” he said.

Mr. Dagoya worked for over three years as a geologist for Oak Mines Fiji Limited, a Nadi-based operation, with exploration work at Malomalo.

Retired entrepreneur and former government minister Sir James Ah Koy is the company’s registered agent.

Mr. Dagoya has also worked for Emperor Gold Mines Fiji Ltd and BOC Gases Fiji.

He worked for the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources in Nabua, Suva, for nearly five years, as a technical assistant in resource geology, and in mining and quarrying.

Mr. Dagoya is a graduate of Earth Sciences and Marine Geology from the University of the South Pacific.

friends at?
Monasavu, in the province of Naitasiri.

Wildlife and bird watching are spectacular up there.

It is close to the sea, located in town and convenient.

What is your favorite corner of the garden?
Everywhere by the sea.

It may seem odd that I’m a mountaineer, working in an industry that deals with underground minerals – but I still love anywhere by the sea.

What is one place in Fiji on your to-do list?
Yatu Lau Group.

The picturesque and pristine images I saw of the place make it the perfect destination.
