Australia’s Small Business and Family Owned Ombudsman Bruce Billson encourages small businesses and family businesses to welcome applications of all ages when hiring staff for the holiday season and through 2022.
With many small family businesses struggling with staff shortages nationwide, Billson suggests that mature employees could help ease the workload.
Billson explains that “Small businesses and family businesses are eager to make the most of… the summer months of trading, but finding staff is now their biggest problem.
“The number of vacancies is at an all time high in the hospitality industry with more than 100,000 positions open across the country, especially in tourism hot spots.
“This is why I encourage small businesses and family businesses to consider age when advertising to people and really consider the many benefits that a mature worker has. can bring to the business.
“Age diversity is good for business. Older workers can uplift an entire workplace, with their knowledge, experience and transferable skills forged over many years. “
Referring specifically to the Cobargo Hotel on the south coast of NSW, which hires mature workers and sees the benefits firsthand, Billson said he was “delighted to see this happening. was already producing ”.
He added that “Small businesses looking for staff need to make sure their advertising is welcoming to all ages and that they are looking for a positive attitude and a willingness to learn skills that can be taught on the job.
“Offer flexible working arrangements where possible to give workers at different stages of life a chance to manage their work-life balance.
“This labor shortage is a problem every 100 years for a range of industries and we know that Australian small businesses and families are poised to lead the country’s economic recovery.
“Above all, we want small businesses and family businesses to survive and thrive into the New Year, which may mean widening the net a bit to make sure you have a great team going forward. “
