The former Holiday Inn in Bridgeport will be transformed into luxury apartments

The city of Bridgeport is without a major hotel after the Holiday Inn on Main Street abruptly closed earlier this month.

The new owners plan to transform the building into luxury apartments.

Developer Primrose Companies acquired the former Bridgeport Holiday Inn this month after the 286-room hotel suffered a drop in occupancy during the pandemic.

The Holiday Inn was Bridgeport’s last major hotel chain. New owner John Guedes says he’s keeping 18 of the 105 units for short-term visitors.

Guedes says that while Primrose specializes in affordable housing, incoming units are intended to attract young professionals heading to New York who will hopefully bring some of their disposable income to the neighborhood.

He says Shelton town center has seen major development after Primrose put market-priced housing there almost 20 years ago.

Renovations will begin one floor at a time, so the first units can hit the market as soon as possible.

“I envision within six to seven months having the ninth floor ready for occupancy. And then every month thereafter, one floor,” Guedes said.

Guedes says he plans to reopen the hotel’s restaurant, bar and dining facilities in early summer.
