Township of Peters Kicks off Holiday Season in New Location | Local news

Unlike a certain hostel in Nazareth a few millennia ago, there was plenty of room at the Peters Township Community Recreation Center.

The Township’s Feasts kickoff event changed location this year, moving from the public library and allowing for greater capacity.

“In December 2020, with the COVID pandemic still in full swing, we wanted to offer something to the community to kick off the vacation,” said Parks and Recreation Director Michele Harmel. “But with restrictions in place, an in-person event just wasn’t possible.”

Instead, his department and the library hosted a drive-thru event for community members to get gifts, see Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus, and drop off letters bound for the North Pole.

“It was a great event. But in 2021, with the restrictions lifted, we really wanted to deliver an in-person event, ”said Harmel. “Because COVID is always a concern, we wanted to do it with less congestion than our normal tree lighting event would generate. “

In addition to providing enough space at the community recreation center, the organizers have set up pre-registration so that participants arrive at different times.

“The event provided tours with Santa Claus and Ms. Clause, games, crafts, a selfie station and refreshments,” Harmel said. “It was a great way for the community to kick off the holiday season. “

In addition, members of the Peters Township Fire Department were on hand to offer a variety of activities to promote safety during the holidays and throughout the year. Additionally, library staff greeted guests with seasonal youth reading material.

And speaking of the library, visitors can see the traditional illuminated tree outside the building, just like in the past.
