Western Men’s Golf Takes Third Place at Holiday Inn Express Invitational | University

After a slow day for the Griffons that included a five hour rain delay, the western Missouri men’s golf course finished strong on the final day of their Holiday Inn Express Invitational Tuesday at St. Joseph Country Club.

“We dug ourselves in a hole yesterday without a doubt, but the problem is we just have character and determination,” said Missouri Western head coach Greg Dillon. “That’s what this team has, it’s a lot of rebound.”

The Griffons won a 283 final round to claim third place. Central Oklahoma won the event with a shot of one in 569. Washburn finished five strokes behind in second.

On day one, the Missouri Western First Team finished the day just eight shots behind Washburn, with a total of four men of 299 (+15) good for a seventh place tie with Southwestern Oklahoma State.

Leading the way for the Griffons by shooting a final 66 round to tie for third place, Missouri Western senior Tom Buffington was proud of his team’s resilience.

“I’m very happy with the way the team fought today,” said Buffington. “We just went to work. I was very, very happy with the way I played. I was very happy with the way Jeff fought. Jett played pretty solid. It was a team effort. “

West Missouri freshman Jeffrey Johnston and former Bishop LeBlond shot one final round 68, missing his last two holes after shooting a first round 81.

Jett Simmons of the Missouri Western shot one final round 72 after his first round 76.

“I guess what I’m most proud of is that even when we play poorly on day one, nobody ever gives up,” said Buffington. ” We went out. We didn’t even think about stopping. We weren’t thinking of nailing it down. We just got out and went to work and fought hard. So it seems that no matter how good or bad we are, we always give our best effort, which I’m really happy to be a part of. “

The Griffons are wrapping up their fall five-tournament schedule next week with a trip to Hays, Kansas for the Fort Hays State Tiger Classic.
